No Window Over the Sink? No Problem!

For the longest time, my kitchen has been my least favorite room in our Cozy Cottage. It is a galley kitchen, and because of this, it really feels like a tunnel. So it goes without saying that it is dark and pretty uninviting. All of these factors pose as issues for me because I spend a lot of my time in the kitchen: cooking, cleaning, thinking about cooking and cleaning. Anyway, y’all get what I mean. The point I’m making is that I could never quite pinpoint why I disliked the kitchen so much, until one day it hit me, I miss having a window over my sink. Which brings me to this post, how to create a view when there’s no window over your kitchen sink, and here’s what I came up with.

Open Shelving

Open shelving- this is a great choice because open shelves literally become a window over your sink. To accomplish this, I removed the cabinet doors. This wasn’t a big deal: I removed 4 screws, added some peel and stick wallpaper to back of the cabinet, and had fun decorating the shelves with an eclectic collection of dishes, cook books, and other items. I tried to incorporate different elements, and I even added birds to demonstrate that open shelves can really be like an open window. I absolutely love how it turned out. This was a simple fix for me because I didn’t have to build or install anything to bring it to life.

Hang Planters

Hanging planters on the wall livens up the place, and infuses a little bit of nature. I was able to bring this idea to life with two planters that I found and fell in love with at Joann’s Fabrics. I love going to Joann’s because I always find that special thing that I have been looking for. As for the plants, I grabbed those from another one of my favorite places to shop for special things, Trader Joe’s. I chose plants that would pretty much thrive in any setting, and they seem to like their new homes above the sink.

Add Lighting

Adding a light underneath the cabinet was a great choice. The light has given the area a whole new sense of welcome and vibrance. I love it. I grabbed this rechargeable light from Amazon. It is both functional and affordable. The pack I bought actually came with 2 lights, and I thought that was awesome. I love being able to have items on reserve.

When I think about how dreary and drab my view used to be, I can’t help but wonder how I made it for so long looking at a wall with a lifeless wreath on it knowing that I could make it better. And y’all, all I can say is this, thank goodness for the power of Revision the ability to see again because with it, I truly gave the space above my sink a much needed update and a new purpose. These simple fixes have changed the entire atmosphere of the kitchen. It feels more open and more refreshing.

Thank y’all for following along as I continue to create magical spaces in our Cozy Cottage. I love showing simple ways to create spaces that reflect my vision for a beautiful and welcoming home. And here’s to hoping that in some way, me sharing my process inspires you to do the same.

Inspired to inspire,
